FAQs
Why are we focusing on food insecurity?
The need in Prince William County is urgent. In the Greater Washington DC Region, Prince William County has the second highest prevalence of food insecurity according to the Capital Area Food Bank Hunger Report, September 2024.
How big is the need in Prince William County?
A staggering 43% of residents now face food insecurity—6 points higher than the regional average. Of those affected, 40% have children at home. In our county alone, over 16,000 children—11% of all youth—are food insecure.
What is the impact of federal budget cuts by the current administration?
The Capital Area Food Bank, the largest food bank provider in the Washington DC region, lost 670,000 meals because of cuts in March. In addition, the USDA funding cuts are impacting food banks that rely on programs like Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) and the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). These cuts have reduced access to fresh produce and other essential food items for low-income families. How are PWC Hunger Free Coalition members helping?
We’re partnering with three food banks across Prince William County to deliver essential resources to our neighbors who are quietly struggling with food insecurity by:
– Volunteering weekly to sort, prepare and deliver food at our partner food pantries
– Collecting food and supplies to increase accessibility to emergency food sources
– Holding a rally and food collection to raise awareness and drive more funding and food donations
